DENIM | RARE
Every month, I will pull a special denim from the archives and offer a limited run custom denim. This month, I’m happy to share one of my favorite finds: 12.2oz Kuroki Organic Indigo Selvedge Denim from Japan.
As always, each pair is hand-cut and sewn on vintage Singer, Union Special and Reece sewing machines.
WHAT MAKES THIS DENIM SO SPECIAL — Kuroki Mills is one of the few denim mills in Japan that is equipped to naturally dye the thread with organic indigo and mill the denim under the same roof. Thereby giving them complete quality control throughout their entire production process.
Founded in 1950 by Tamotsu Kuroki as a cotton fabric manufacturer and seller, the mill began to produce its own denim in the 1960's. Originally, they vat-dyed their denim, but by 1965, the mill began rope-dyeing.
The rope-dyeing technique takes all of the yarns together in long ropes and briefly dunks them in natural indigo. They then emerge from the indigo vat before getting dunked again. This constant exposure and dunking means that they never sit in the indigo long enough for the dye to get all the way to the center core of the yarn, so the outside gets blue while the inside stays white.
This gave Kuroki product a more authentic look and allowed the fabric to develop fades that mimicked and even rivaled those of the original American blue jean makers. By 1970, the company was producing denim exclusively and Kuroki now supplies denim to some of the heaviest hitters in the denim industry.
